Audition Movie Review
Audition is a seriously disturbing horror movie. Takashi Miike directs the movie in a way that makes the ending truly terrifying. For the first hour or so the movie is no more that a bizarre love story, the strangeness is enough to keep you interested and lulls you into a false sense of security so that when the movie takes on a twisted-horror feel the impact is so much more intense... and graphic and intense it sure is!
The plot follows a businessman, Shigehara Aoyama, in the movie making industry looking for love. His son advises him that it is time to move on after the untimely demise of his wife. In order to find the perfect potential wife, Aoyama and his business partner set up auditions for the female lead in a production destined to never get off the ground. After many auditions from a variety of nutcase females up steps Asami Yamazaki, a quiet and mysterious 24 year old with a reluctance to speak too much about her past. Ayoama instantly falls for her and invites her out to dinner, the more he gets to know her the more intrigued he becomes and when she suddenly disappears he tracks her down by investigating the few clues he has about her past.
At this point the movie takes a bizarre twist and Aoyama get's drawn into the horrific past of Asami and eventually realises her true history and her objectives for their relationship. He realises that he definitely picked the wrong girl for the part as the viewer is subjected to one of the most extreme movie endings in the history of Asian cinema!
If watched in the right conditions (late at night in a quiet situation with the volume up loud) by the end of the movie you are left with a severe sense of "what the f**k" and a very uneasy sensation.
If you are a fan of Asian horror and you haven't seen this... then you must. I highly recommend it.
