R-Point Movie Review
R-Point is an original Korean supernatural horror fused with a Vietnam War story. The movie relies on a feeling of eeriness and isolation rather than blood and guts to create a superbly chilling and spooky piece of Korean cinema blurring the lines between real life and the supernatural.
The movie follows a group of nine soldiers sent into the jungle after receiving a distress call from another nine, presumed dead, Korean soldiers sent on a scouting mission six months earlier.
Expecting a straightforward search and rescue mission, lieutenant Choi Tae-in and his group of nine soldiers are high spirited with no thoughts of not returning from this textbook mission, but once in the spooky jungles at R-Point thing begin to go off plan as many strange things begin to happen creating a feeling of fear and unease. With the realization that the extra member of their team is one of the men they have been sent to rescue the situation intensifies and before long the squadron are struggling to keep a grip on their sanity.
This is definitely a late-night, lights-off type of movie if you want to really appreciate the scariness of the situation and although it is for the most part a war movie, it is definitely a horror movie by the time the end credits roll. Definitely worth watching (and soon as it is rumored someone in Hollywood is about to ruin it with a remake!)
