Visitor Q Movie Review

This has got to be the most extreme and strange Asian Horror Movie that I have seen to date. Although there is a small amount of gore this movie focuses more on taboos than shocks. Takashi Miike leave no taboo untouched including incest, domestic violence, necrophilia, extreme bullying and wierd sexual perversions.

The movie starts as it means to go on and opens with Kiyoshi Yamazaki visiting a brothel, as part of his research for a documentary he is making about sex and violence in Japan’s youth, only to be confronted by his daughter who is working there. A job’s a job and before you know it he is making sweet love to her!

Soon after "Q" introduces himself by sneaking up behind Kiyoshi and hitting him over the head with a rock, and here begins their wonderful friendship and before you know it "Q" is living in the dysfunctional family home. Each family member has their problems, the son is bullied and takes it out on his mother, Dad can’t satisfy Mum and the daughter… well she’s an underage whore! "Q" enables the family to face their problems in the most extreme ways. The mother get’s off on lactating, Kiyoshi gets off on being dominating (there is a fairly disturbing scene where he makes love to a corpse… and that’s not the disturbing bit but I’ll leave that surprise for you to find out on your own) and before you know it the bullies are dead and there is family bliss in the Yamazaki household. So the family are all happy and can enjoy family activities together… such as corpse dismemberment.

With his work done "Q" disappears into the night to go and help the next family!

The real genius behind the movie is that it is not just made for shock value, there is a very deep cynisism throughout which is hammered home in an extreme over-the-top way. I guarantee that there will be a character in this movie that you can relate to and by the end of the movie you are feeling a strange sympathy for the horrible people in it. You are bombarded with extreme, evil images but are left with a happy feeling that everything has turned out ok for the characters although at the back of your mind you feel you should be appalled with "Q" but cannot work out why you are not.

If you want a traditional horror movie then this is not for you, if you want a moment of thought provoking self-realisation then you must see it.

Rating: Visitor Q gets four stars out of five
